What I’m reading and watching:

I’m reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma and just finished In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan.  I also just finished watching A Botany of Desire and Food Inc.  To say that my food habits are changing is a huge understatement.  I’ll tell you what I’m telling everyone else: Just know that ignorance can be bliss because this is life-changing stuff, for most people anyway.

Another great documentary to watch along these lines is The Future of Food.

I agree. Reading similar books, knowing several farmers, and working on a small farm all pushed us strongly into changing career paths and starting our own farm. Every time we learned something about the food system, we started doing it ourselves, and have never looked back. Now that we’re up to producing all our own produce, most of our own dairy, meat, and eggs, and some grains & fruits, it’s been a wild ride of taking control.

We also found that not just our eating and cooking habits changed, but our tasting habits changed. We’ve become drastically more sensitive to food quality, ingredient quality, and the presence of preservatives and chemicals in food since our diet changed to dominantly on-farm-grown ingredients.
